Christa David Solo Exhibition

Presented by 193 Gallery x 1-54 New York May 1-4, 2024

Christa David, a visual artist, had a solo exhibition presented by 193 Gallery during the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, held in the Starrett-Lehigh Building in New York City, from May 1–4, 2024.

Inspired by the artistic works of Romare Bearden, Wangechi Mutu, Alma Woodsey Thomas and literary works of James Baldwin, Christa David fuses the mediums of painting, collage and assemblage to create and recreate stories about home, belonging, faith, and identity.

In her artwork, context, specifically story, is essential.

Using materials sourced from historical archives, vintage and contemporary magazines and newspapers, Christa cuts and composes mostly intimate-sized narrative collages that describe her thoughts about the stories she has heard and told about herself and others.

– Christa David

Christa David uses her work to sort out her feelings and thoughts about the complex and enduring mark of structural racism in the United States and its impact on her life/body and the lives/bodies of those who look like her.

The collage work focuses on the stories of Black and Brown people (herself included) existing in and outside of spaces (material and immaterial) – spaces created by others and by us.

The artist’s meditation practice began in fall 2016 and has evolved and deepened overtime.
