Surprise! The Hunger Games, one of the most anticipated films of 2012, is already setting new box office records. Okay, that’s a surprise to no one, but it’s worth noting that the movie’s $68.3 million opening makes it the biggest opening day of any non-sequel, and the fifth-biggest debut of all time.
According to Gawker, the competition couldn’t come close. Cop-comedy 21 Jump Street earned a fraction of Hunger‘s numbers with $6.3 million this past Friday, while the poorly-received John Carter dwindled down by 66 percent this week. To the victor go the spoils, indeed.
