Ricky Powell is no new comer to the NYC street photography scene, some can even argue that he served as the unofficial house photographer for Def Jam. Long before the days of cell phones legendary photographer Ricky Powell was recording the historic beginnings of hip-hop with his old school Instamatic camera. With a portfolio consisting of candid photos of everyone from hip hop pioneers Run DMC to the Beastie Boys Powell has become a fixture in the urban music scene.
This Saturday in celebration of Powell’s 50th birthday The Rickford Institues All Star Classic exhibit, which was curated by Powell, will open at Milk Studios. Iconic images by Estevan Oriol, Jamel Shabazz, Martha Cooper, Charlie Ahearn and Joe Conzo will be on display alongside up and comers Craig Wetherby, Angela Boatright, Aviva Klein, 13th Witness and Mel D. Cole.
