Northside Festival, celebrating the best of music, innovation and content, has revealed its 2016 programming schedule, taking place June 6-12 in the heart of North Brooklyn. Now in its eighth year, over 100,000 creatives and tastemakers will ascend on Brooklyn to discover what’s next across music, innovation and content, with panels, keynotes, events and a music lineup featuring over 400 artists with newly added acts, such as Grandmaster Flash. Northside Music (June 9-12)
Serving as a platform for established artists and a launch pad for rising talent,Northside Music strives to create a wide-ranging experience curated for Brooklyn’s in-the-know music fans. More than 400 artists will perform at intimate venues, outdoor parks, in the streets, and everywhere in between.
Indie-rock powerhouse Wolf Parade will kick off Northside Music with a massive free show on Thursday, June 9th at neighborhood hub McCarren Park. We couldn’t be happier to announce on Friday, June 10th, the space will turn into a giant block party with hip-hop and DJing pioneer Grandmaster Flash. (Both shows are free with RSVP on a first-come, first-served basis; Music and Premium badge-holders guaranteed entry).
On June 11th, crossover country star Kacey Musgraves and indie-rock hero Conor Oberst will co-headline the McCarren stage. The following night, the legendaryBrian Wilson will perform Pet Sounds in its entirety, plus other fan favorites, in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the landmark album to close out NorthsideMusic on June 12th. Both shows are benefits for the Open Space Alliance for North Brooklyn (OSA), a nonprofit dedicated to building a stronger North Brooklyn by improving 45 parks and playgrounds and getting neighbors involved in their parks.
Other newly announced acts include: B Boys, Dälek, Eagulls, HOMESHAKE, Into It. Over It., Jack & Eliza, JEFF the Brotherhood, Land of Talk, Pure Bathing Culture, Royce da 5’9″, The World Is a Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid to Die, Xeno & Oaklander, Yowler and dozens more.
These join such previously announced acts as: And the Kids, Aye Nako, Bing & Ruth, The Cave Singers, Childbirth, Colleen Green, D∆WN, Diarrhea Planet, Diet Cig, DJ Spinn, Dreamcrusher, The Felice Brothers, The Gotobeds, Grouper, Hinds, Institute, Juliana Huxtable, King Khan & the Shrines, Lotic, Lushlife + CSLSX, Machinedrum, Marshstepper, Oddisee & Good Compny, Peanut Butter Wolf, Priests, Psychic Ills, Rabit, Rationale, ROSTAM, SALES, Steve Gunn & the Outliners, Subhumans, Viceroy and Weyes Blood. Other highlights include the US debut of Anna Homler and Steven Warwick’s mesmeric 1980s performance art project Breadwoman, and an one-night-only covers show with Frankie Cosmos performing songs from Liz Phair’s Exile in GuyvilleAva Luna taking on Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire de Melody Nelson and Deradoorian conquering Black Sabbath’s Master of Reality as a nod to the long-running 33 1/3 book series.

Northside Innovation (June 9-10)
Now in its fifth year, Northside Innovation is growing as a conference and expo that brings together the best and brightest names in global innovation for panels, keynotes, networking events and conversations on some of the most pressing and exciting topics facing the community. Attendees will engage during this central hub and hear more about the future of startups, tech and innovation.
More than 80 speakers from major consumer brands, forward thinking startups, and tech giants, such as Amazon, PayPal, IBM Watson, Samsung USA, GE, betaworks, and Rebecca Minkoff, will convene to create interactive experiences and conversations. Keynotes will be delivered by Amazon CTOWerner Vogels, Fashion designer Rebecca Minkoff and CEO Uri Minkoff, Paypal CEO Dan Schulman,Samsung USA CMO Mark Mathieu and musician Ryan Leslie. A few of this year’s featured talks include:
  • Amazon CTO Werner Vogels will discuss the cloud and how startups are disrupting this space with Fortune’s Andrew Nusca
  • Rebecca and Uri Minkoff will chat with Fortune’s Lauren Covello on how technology is impacting the future of fashion and retail

  • PayPal CEO Dan Schulman, interviewed by Fortune’s Aaron Task will chat about the future of mobile commerce
  • Musician Ryan Leslie and Mondelez’s B. Bonin Bough will discuss why messaging is the next frontier for attention and relationships
  • IBM Watson will dive into rapid ideation and design thinking workshop

Northside Content (June 7-8)
As Northside has grown rapidly, a new Content track was added to uncover what’s next in original video content across two days of interactive presentations, screenings, roundtable discussions, with cutting edge content creators, brands and the industries around them. Focusing on Virtual reality and the latest in original online video more than 50 speakers including some of today’s brilliant storytellers, VR innovators, studios, streaming services, YouTube personalities, and agency strategists will address hot topics in the space. Participants include Vox Media, MikMak, M ss ng P eces, Artsy,The New York Times T Brand Studio, Legs Media/Milk Studios and Andrew Jarecki, director of the critically acclaimed HBO series The Jinx and founder of the KnowMe app, will keynote Northside Content on June 7th. A few of this year’s featured talks include:
  • Director Andrew Jarecki of KnowMe and The Jinx and Adam Leibsohn of Giphy will translate language of video and GIFs
  • Vox Entertainment will speak on their expansion into video content with Chad Mumm and Dan Porter of WME
  • Maureen Polo of Fullscreen Media will discuss plans for branded content integrating advertisers, creators and premium entertainment
  • Ari Kuschnir of M ss ng P eces, Katrina Craigwell of GE, Jamin Warren of Kill ScreenClive Thompson of WIRED and NYT – T Brand Studio will discuss the latest VR innovations
  • Rachel Tipograph of MikMak alongside Conde Nast will chat on creating micro moments that are built for mobile capture audience attention, and drive commerce too
  • Hear how to win the attention of the Snapchat Generation with MTV, from programming for Discovery to giving the right voice for brands in Live Stories

On the closing weekend at McCarren Park, Jack Link’s will be celebrating National Jerky Day with a surprise to be revealed at a later date.
Fortune, the exclusive media partner of Northside Innovation, will host a series of panels and fireside chats around entrepreneurship and business transformation on the “Fortune Venture Stage at the Wythe Hotel.”
Douglas Elliman Real Estate is the presenting partner of the Innovation stage at the Wythe Hotel Screening Room, as well as the hosts for a special Thursday afternoon luncheon. The outdoor event will debut a guide to “Innovative Entertaining,” co-curated in partnership with Cool Hunting.

The Consulate General of Switzerland and swissnex are presenting the “Swiss Startup Innovation Pitch Competition” at the Brooklyn Brewery on Friday, June 10th 3-5pm, where entrepreneurs from Switzerland’s National Startup Team will pitch their innovative companies in front of leaders in tech and VCs based here in NYC.
Modern finance company SoFi presents the “SoFi Stage at the Brooklyn Brewery” and a very special happy hour event during Northside Innovation.
