How to Use Inspiration to Your Advantage

Far too many people get the wrong idea about inspiration when it comes to art. Of course, there’s no real right or wrong way to use inspiration, but there are a couple of things that people do which can be detrimental to their creative process. Inspiration should be something that uplifts us, gives us new ideas, and helps us create brilliant new works of art. However, many people simply use inspiration as an excuse to copy others, or they might even forget that they were inspired in the first place and let all of those ideas go to waste.

So in this post, we’re going to talk about a few ways to use inspiration to your advantage and how it can serve as a foundation for new art projects going forward.

Keep all of your old art pieces and use them as inspiration

A fantastic source of inspiration is to use your old artworks as a guide. Many people overlook the importance of using your past work as a form of inspiration, but it’s actually one of the best ways to start looking at how you’ve progressed and changed over the years. You can look at some of the things you’ve improved on, but you can also see where you’ve regressed or even become stale. Make sure you’re analyzing your old work, but most importantly, keep it in a collection and don’t throw it out or delete it off your hard drive. Keep everything that you do and use it as inspiration for your future works.

Be active in the art community

It’s also a good idea to start being more active in the art community, especially if you’re looking to network with other artists and eventually get featured in magazines or even art galleries. People like Frederica Wald are a great source of information and you’ll find lots of art influencers on social media platforms like Instagram and TikTok. However, it’s a good idea not to rely too heavily on those social influencers. A lot of information you can get is usually from art bloggers who are extremely knowledgeable about their craft and also the industry. Rely on these people a little more and you’ll go far with new sources of inspiration.

Creating new works from your ideas

It’s important to understand that anything you see can be a new idea that is just waiting to be explored. Whether it’s the Affordable Art Fair or some unknown artist that you’ve found on the internet, you can use anything as an idea as long as you follow these simple rules:

  • Don’t copy, but use their work to inspire you.
  • Stop comparing your work to theirs.
  • Ask yourself what you love about a piece that you’ve seen.
  • But also ask what you don’t like and try to change or improve it.
  • Add your personal style to something instead of trying to copy someone else’s style.
  • Don’t worry if your work looks too similar–consider that attempt as practice.

As long as you follow these steps, you can make great use of inspiration to create beautiful works of art.
