Cover Story: Sarah Hyland

Heather: How similar are you to your character, Haley?

Sarah: Haley and I have exactly one and a half things in common: neither of us can cook to save our lives, and I always have my phone on me. My phone is the half thing — but only half — because I’m not always texting. I always forget to text people back, even though I have my phone on me. There are a lot of things that might slip Haley’s mind during the course of a day, but texting somebody back is not one of them.

Heather: Of all the parents on the show, who is your favorite to hang out with?

Sarah: Oh, that’s hard. Everybody asks that and I always think it’s really unfair. I generally love everyone, but me and Julie [Bowen] are really close and I love hanging out with Julie. But Sofia [Vergara] is also amazing and Jesse [Ferguson]. It’s one of those things where I can’t decide. It’s one of those things where you start to answer it and then you’re like, “Oh, but no but Ty, oh, but no not Ty, Jesse.” You know, it’s really hard, you can’t really give a hundred percent straight answer.

Heather: I was reading in The Enquirer, is it true because in The Enquirer it’s always wrong, that there is a swear jar and Julie Bowen owes the most money because she swears the most on set around the kids?

Sarah: I guess it’s true. I mean, I don’t participate because I like money and I don’t like to part with it and I curse all the time, so I don’t know. I think the only person that actually goes by it is Rico [Rodriguez]. He really cares about it, and I don’t work with him all the time, so good for me.

Heather: Where does the money go? Does it go to a charity or to his pocket or what?

Sarah: I have no idea. I don’t really ask questions like that because I don’t participate. One time I said “damn,” which I didn’t even know was a curse, and Rico [said], ‘Oh, money for the swear jar.’ I’m sorry, but just for damn? I’m sorry, I didn’t know that was a curse word, but they’re adorable and I totally get it. I think it goes to charities but I don’t participate in that. I’d be giving kids millions of dollars. [Laughs]

I thought when you mentioned The Enquirer you meant when they mentioned that me and my boyfriend are getting married.

Heather: Oh, is that in The Enquirer, too?

Sarah: Yeah, it’s ridiculous. Someone tweeted me it [and] I read that. It was so weird. It was hilarious, I couldn’t stop laughing. Not true, we’re 21 – that’s too soon. We’ve said in interviews that we act like a married couple, so maybe that’s where they got the story from. But it said that there was an inside source that said we were tying the knot in 2012, I’d like to meet that person that was the inside source.

Heather: I’d love to meet the inside source for all the inside sources. If you meet someone named inside source you might not want to talk to them about too much…Your boyfriend is really cute, he was your co-star in the movie, right?

Sarah: Yes

Heather: You’ve been together two years. How did you meet?

Sarah: We actually met at the screen test for High School Musical 3.

Heather: How did he ask you out? What happened?

  1. Sarah Hyland really is both an amazing actress and a down-to-earth person. I think it takes real strength to remain true to oneself and act.
