Art on Paper, New York City’s celebrated, medium-driven fair, is excited to announce its return to downtown Manhattan’s Pier 36 during September 2024’s Armory Art Week.
This year’s fair, taking place from September 5–8, will feature 100 galleries showcasing top modern and contemporary paper-based art, marking a significant milestone with its tenth edition.
Renowned for its distinctive approach, Art on Paper has consistently pushed boundaries and transcended artistic conventions, establishing itself as an essential destination for art enthusiasts, collectors, and industry professionals. Each year, the fair celebrates the beloved medium of paper, emphasizing both its versatility and its enduring allure.
The tenth edition will feature unique and powerful projects curated by Artistic Director Nato Thompson, with a special focus on can’t-miss installations that highlight the creative potential of paper.
New York City galleries will be well-represented with highlights including Spanierman Modern, Harman Projects, Uprise Art, The Tolman Collection, Tanya Weddemire Gallery, Tomato Mouse, Kingsland Editions, Lincoln Center Editions, and Fremin Gallery. These esteemed galleries will be joined by Philadelphia’s COMMONWEAL and Bertrand Productions, San Francisco’s Paul Thiebaud Gallery and Electric W, Maryland’s Catalyst Contemporary and Lily Press®, Miami’s Catalysta and Adamar Fine Arts, Connecticut’s Carol Corey Fine Art, and many more.
Internationally, the fair will feature Rotterdam’s NL=US Gallery, dedicated to the promotion of emerging and established artists, Station Independent Projects and Spence Gallery from Toronto, Argentina’s AC Contemporary and GalleryLabs, and Stoney Road Press, one of Ireland’s most innovative producers of limited edition fine art.
Another highlight at the fair is the Debbie Dickinson Gallery feating the works of Anthony Haden-Guest, Bill Buchman , Evan Sebastioan Lagache and Cosmo Mullican.
Art on Paper will also see the return of the Booksmart Fair for its second edition, partnering once again with the Center for Book Arts. The Center for Book Arts, the oldest nonprofit dedicated to uplifting and furthering book arts through education, preservation, exhibition, generation, and community building, will organize this ‘fair within a fair.’ The Booksmart Fair will feature over twenty institutions and artists showcasing books that transcend the typical scope of an art book fair, aiming to present ideas, material, and form on equal footing. Participating artists and organizations include Press Rappel, Maggie K Barrett, Forest Magic Press, Andrea Frank, Pop Paper, Iviva Olenick, Opuntia Visual, Downy Books, AWater Press, Adrianne Wortzel, CODEX Foundation, MAKERMAKER, Body&Forma, Memory Press, Purgatory Pie Press, Seth Apter, LAUREN SIMIIN BERKE, 51 Personae, Mixdmediamashup, VisualBooks, Rujuta Rao, and Green Moss Paper.
Additionally, Shoestring Press will return with the Live Printmaking Studio, offering dynamic, on-site printmaking demonstrations. This Brooklyn-based fine art print studio and membership-based shared workspace will provide attendees with opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of printmaking. Throughout the fair, Shoestring Press will showcase various printmaking methods, create editioned works available exclusively, and offer free workshops for attendees.
Confirmed public projects include an installation by Elise Ferguson with Kingsland Editions, promising to captivate and engage visitors with its innovative approach. Following Ching Ke Lin’s pop-up exhibition at Governor’s Island this summer, his projects will be featured by Fremin Gallery. Additionally, Fabien Dettori will present a performative installation through Nicolas Auvray Gallery, while Sookkyung Park will showcase a hanging paper installation in the Miraval Lounge, presented by Catalyst Contemporary. A special text-based project by Gail Tarantino will also be presented through Uprise Art.
Art on Paper’s visual and experiential moments have set the fair apart for years. Taking place at Pier 36, a spacious and museum-like venue, provides the perfect setting to engage with a wide range of artistic expressions. From prints and drawings to three-dimensional paper sculptures and more, visitors will be immersed in a world where paper comes alive with imagination and artistic brilliance.
